Stop 1: Medeo & Shymbulak
The world-famous Medeo ice rink, built in 1972, is located 1,691 meters above sea level. The ice surface occupies 10,500 square meters and often hosts skating, hockey and figure skating competitions.
The Shymbulak ski resort is situated in the picturesque Zailiysky Alatau Mountain, at 2,260 meters above sea level and around 25 kilometers from the city center of Almaty. An elevator at the resort leads to a height of 3,163 meters above sea level and offers breathtaking views of the surroundings.
Stop 2: Panfilov Park
The Park of the 28 Panfilov Guardsmen is an urban park located in the centre-east areas of Almaty and surrounds the Ascension Cathedral. It is named after 28 soldiers from the Alma-Ata Infantry unit who died while defending Moscow from the German invasion during the II World War, also known as the Panfilov heroes.
The group took its name from Ivan Panfilov, the general commanding the 316th division, which despite heavy casualties, managed to significantly delay the Germans advance to Moscow, buying time for the defenders of the city. An eternal flame commemorating the heroes of World War II and the Eastern Front burns in front of the giant black monuments of the soldiers, which came from all 15 Soviet Republics.
The Ascension Cathedral, or Zenkov Cathedral, is a Russian Orthodox church located at the centre of Panfilov Park. Completed in 1907, it is entirely is made out of wood without the use of nails. At 56 meters tall, it is claimed to be the second-tallest wooden church in the world.
Stop 3: Memorial of Glory and the Eternal Flame
The Memorial of Glory is a memorial complex in Almaty located inside Panfilov Park. From the Memorial, it is possible to move on to Republic Square and the Independence Monument, where the visitor can feel the bustling energy of the Apple city and learn more about its history.
Stop 4: Kazakhstan's Central State Museum
The largest museum in Almaty and one of the largest in Central Asia, Central State Museum houses one of the most prominent collections of cultural and historical heritage of Kazakhstan.
On the Way Sightseeing: A visit to Kok-Tobe Hill, where the tallest TV tower in the world is located. A short ride from the top of the hill to the city center through the famous Almaty cableway offers a great way to see the city from a different perspective.
