Almaty Tour by “Turan Asia”

This is a two-day tour of the crossroads city of Almaty and its surrounding area, offering beautiful views of mountains, historical landmarks, and a vibrant atmosphere that embodies a fusion of diverse cultures. Formerly known as Alma-Ata – literally “Father of Apples” - Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan, situated in the northern foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau. Boasting a mix of tradition and modernity, Almaty offers visitors a unique experience which blends the past and the present

First Day:

Panfilov Park, Zenkov Cathedral, Presidential Palace, Monument of Independence

The tour will begin with a visit to Panfilov Park, dedicated to the memory of the 28 Panfilov guards from Almaty who valiantly defended Moscow against the Nazi invasion in 1941. Here, one can see a formidable war memorial featuring soldiers from each of the former fifteen Soviet Socialist Republics bursting forth from a map of USSR. Their muscular forms survey a pink tuff square centered on an eternal flame dedicated to those who lost their lives in the conflict.

Next, we explore the candy chequered domes and golden turrets of the iconic Zenkov (Ascension) Cathedral, the world's most elevated wooden church. Completed in 1907, the church is one of the few Tsarist era buildings to have survived a massive earthquake which struck Almaty in 1911, this despite being made entirely of wood, right down to the nails.

This will be followed by a visit to the thronging Zelyony (Green) Bazaar with its pyramids of fresh produce, and the golden-domed Central Mosque on Pushkin Street, where a statue of a warrior on horseback stands guard.

The guests will discover famous modern highlights of Almaty, including the bustling Al-Farabi street, the Presidential Palace, and the Monument of Independence, where atop a lofty column, a replica of the popular national symbol, the Golden Man soars upon a winged snow leopard. Discovered in 1969, bedecked in an ornate ceremonial suit, the figure represented dates from the 3nd or 3rd century.

Rivalling the relics of Ancient Egypt, the workmanship of the Golden Man artefacts reveals a philosophical people with a strong mythology and an understanding of the cosmos.

Sightseeing along the way:  We recommend a ride in the Almaty underground, known for its cleanliness and splendor, adorned with marble floors and captivating artwork. With trains arriving at frequent intervals and temperatures consistently below 20°C, it provides an optimal mode of transportation, especially during the summer months.

Kok-Tobe Mountain

The guests can enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before visiting Kok-Tobe Mountain, the highest point in the city standing at 1,100 meters above sea level. The location boasts breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains and the city.

Built in 1972 and situated over 1,690 meters above sea level, the Medeo Ice Rink is renowned worldwide for its vast ice surface spanning 10,500 square meters, making it an ideal venue for skating, ice hockey, and figure skating competitions.

Next, we venture to the picturesque ravine of Zailiysky Alatau Mountain to explore the Shymbulak ski resort, located 2,260 meters above sea level. At an elevation of 3,163 meters above sea level, the resort's elevators offer breathtaking views of the surroundings.

Our guests can observe the captivating hunting birds at the Sunkar nursery, home to rare and endangered bird species. This unique facility houses a diverse collection of birds and related equipment, serving as the only one of its kind in Kazakhstan. With over 1,060 birds raised and 260 falcons released into the wild, the nursery plays a crucial role in conservation efforts.

While learning about the biological characteristics of the various stunning birds here, the guests can also witness a spectacular falcon show where trained falcons showcase their hunting and fishing skills, among other impressive feats. The visit will also provide insights into the rich traditions and history of falconry through an engaging performance featuring free flying birds of prey.
