This is a two-day tour of the city of Almaty, known as the Apple City, as well as the nearby picturesque sites of Charyn Canyon and Kolsay Lakes.
Day One:
Medeo Ice Rink & Shymbulak Ski Resort
Built in 1972 at an altitude of 1,691 meters above sea level, the world-famous Medeo Ice Rink covers 10,500 square meters and is home to skating, hockey, and figure skating competitions.
25 kilometers from the center of Almaty city, Shymbulak ski resort is located in the picturesque ravine of the Zailiysky Alatau Mountains at an altitude of 2,260 meters above sea level. The ski lifts reach an altitude of 3,163 meters.
Panfilov Park
Panfilov Park, also known as the “Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen”, is an urban park located in east-central Almaty, in an area surrounding the Ascension Cathedral. It is dedicated to the 28 soldiers from an Alma-Ata Infantry unit that are believed to have died while defending Moscow from the German invasion during the Second World War, known also as the Panfilov heroes.
The group took its name from Ivan Panfilov, the General commanding the 316th division, which despite heavy casualties, managed to significantly delay the German advance to Moscow, thus buying time for the city’s defenders. An eternal flame commemorating the fallen of World War II and the Eastern Front burns in front of the giant black monument honoring soldiers from all 15 Soviet Republics.
Zenkov Cathedral
This famous Russian Orthodox cathedral located in Panfilov Park was completed in 1907, and is made entirely out of wood, impressively constructed without using nails. Standing at 56 meters tall, it is known as the second tallest wooden church in the world.
Memorial of Glory & Eternal Flame
The Memorial of Glory is a complex in Almaty in the Panfilov Park. The eternal flame mentioned above was lit as part of this memorial complex. The Square of the Republic and the Monument of Independence are great places to feel the energy of the Apple City, and learn about its history.
Central State Museum of Kazakhstan
The Central State Museum is the largest museum in Almaty and one of the largest museums in Central Asia. It hosts a collection of 200,000 artefacts of material and spiritual culture.
Kok-Tobe Hill
The tallest TV tower in the world is situated on the Kok-Tobe Hill. A short ride from the top of the hill to the center of the city via the famous Almaty cableway will allow the visitor to experience breathtaking views of the beautiful surroundings.
Day Two:
Charyn Canyon
The canyon is situated on the spurs of the Tian Shan Mountains near the border with China. It is a natural monument formed from sedimentary rocks, about 12 million years old and stretching 154 kilometers along the valley of the Charyn River. The most attractive and frequently visited tourist destination is the so-called "Valley of Castles". The grove of relict species of ash, which survived during the era of glaciation, is preserved within the canyon, and the only other such grove is found in the Grand Canyon in North America. The landscape diversity of Charyn Canyon contributes to the variety of flora and fauna.
Kolsay Lakes
One of the most beautiful lakes nestled in the surroundings of Almaty is Kolsay Lake, found in the larger grouping known as Kolsay Lakes. In the Kazakh language, 'Kolsay' means 'a lake in the valley'. It is known as the “blue necklace of the Northern Tien Shan”, and upon seeing it, it’s quite easy to understand why.
